Gordon

Gordon fondly called Gordo by the San Bernardino Shelter Staff.  Gordon is a neutered male Red Standard borne August 3, 2004 a Dachshund Shar-pei mix now in the RDR Sanctuary where he will live out the rest of his life with his brothers and sisters.

Gordon had a very difficult life before he came to our rescue. Animal Control thinks he climbed a fence to escape a bad environment. The home he left has since been cited for animal abuse, and all their animals have been re-homed. Because he was terrified of people, poor Gordon was scheduled to be euthanized, but we fought for him and got him a place at Riverside Dachshund Rescue. Who could resist his funny, dachshund-Shar pei face and Dachshund body?

Gordon had been seriously neglected. He was covered with fleas and ticks, severely malnourished and had ears that were infected and crusted with fly strike. We've gotten rid of his fleas and ticks and cleared up his ear infection. He's been neutered, and he's current on his vaccines. We've de-wormed him and dosed him with Front-line, and he is responding to his weight-gain diet. He'll need to be in foster care for a while longer, until he is fully recovered, but when he's ready for his forever home, he's going to make someone a wonderful companion.

Part of Gordon's rehabilitation has been learning that it's good to be a fur-person and that not all humans are bad. He is responding really well to his socialization therapy with humans and other dachshunds. He seems to love other dogs and does not mind sharing his toys and food with them, but he does not like cats. He enjoys lying in the sun with his doxie friends, chewing on bones and playing with toys.

Gordon is house trained, and we are working on his crate training. At first, he was very frightened of his crate, but now he is happy to sleep in it, as long as we leave the door open.

  LUCY LOU  "Lucy"

Our sweet Lucy is a black/tan standard female her age is guessed to be about 11 years old.

Lucy is an Animal Control Rescue, it seems someone adopted her, she was taken to a local vet for spay, vaccinations and health check our little Lucy was in terrible condition needing lots of dental work done.  The vet found a tumor on her left rear leg; called her new mom to let her know, she said yes remove the tumor.  Well when the new owner found out how much it cost to remove the tumor that was not included with the adoption fee she threw a fit, Lucy's new owner then called animal control and told them they were not going to adopt Lucy due to the high cost of vet services.   Animal Control called Riverside Dachshund Rescue and told us the story; well we said how sad that someone had to be so uncaring about poor Lucy.  Lucy stayed in the vet hospital for fifteen days after contracting Kennel Cough.

Lucy might be eleven, but don't tell her that.  She is energetic and plays with the younger doxies and wears them out.  She is in wonderful health and as frisky as the puppies she plays with.  Lucy is a loving sweet and gentle girl.  Lucy does not like cats or mice she gets along well with other dogs.  Lucy sleeps in her own bed right next to mom's bed.  She is a healthy happy senior dog looking for a forever home that will appreciate this fun loving, playful senior.  She loves the dogie blankets warm from the dryer.

PRINCESS FIONA   "FIONA"

Fiona is a shelter rescue. The Animal Shelter determined Fiona as un-adoptable; she was very frightened in the shelter, aggressive toward the shelter personnel, biting one while being temperament tested with a big blanket thrown over her head and being shocked with a cattle prod.

We went right to her rescue. Once out of the slammer Fiona relaxed, we saw a wonderful sweet Dachshund emerge. Fiona was named after the "Princess Fiona" in the movie Shrek. You see our lovely Fiona is about 36 pounds of gorgeous red smooth standard Doxie. A bit of an ogre Doxie compared to the rest but a beautiful princess all the same. She has stunning red hair and warm brown eyes and wants to keep your lap and bed warm all the time. Fiona needed someone experienced with previously abused animals as she had been badly handled in the past and needed a patient hand and a loving heart. We worked hard daily with her to regain her confidence and she did very well, becoming a more trusting creature. Fiona is that of a dying breed; as she is the original German standard Doxie bred to hunt and protect their master. Fiona has a bit different temperament. Standards tend to be much more laid back and less barky. Fiona now likes to lie about and look lovely, being the princess of the house like all of these wonderful dogs should be, this is her job.  Fiona often can be found lying in the sun on lounge looking very regal with the sun's rays dancing off her beautiful coat.  Fiona now 4 will remain at the RDR Sanctuary.

MISS HENNIE PENNY  "PENNY"

When my telephone rang Friday afternoon, October 28th, I never expected it to be the Rescue Coordinator from the San Bernardino shelter.  The Rescue coordinator said Penny's owner was standing at the counter wanting to give this sweet little lady up, they were moving and no longer wanted her.  Jennifer said Penny was shaking and very cold and would I come and get her she was to delicate to be put in the shelter where she would be put to sleep, I told Jennifer I was leaving immediately to come get her. I live 90 minutes from the shelter on a good day it was Friday late afternoon.

Jennifer called a local vet and made arrangements for Penny to be dropped off there, while waiting for me to arrive she had a health check, her vaccinations updated, warmed up and loved a lot.  About one hour later praying I would get there before the vet closed at 6:00, I made it with time to spare I found this tiny beautiful scared to death little bundle of love wrapped in a warm little blanket and very happy to see me.  I held her close while paying her bill and home she came with one little stop at a local craft store due to the heavy traffic.  Penny just lover her shopping adventure, she got lots of love and attention.  She was in doxie heaven with all the people wanting to meet her.

Penny is in excellent health. Penny had what appeared to be a seizure on November 17, 2005; she was taken to the vet's office to be checked.  She has had blood work done to determine if she will have other seizures.  Her blood work was perfect and has had no other seizures.   Her vaccinations are all up-to-date. She is a loving little lap dog who loves to be with you every minute of the day.  Penny sleeps on the big bed under the down comforter.  Penny makes a little growly sound when other dogs are near.  Penny is potty trained.

Penny has been returned to RDR three times for peeing and pooping in her new families bed.  We found out the hard way that if Penny is not happy in her new home she will get on the bed and do her business.  Penny is happy here at the RDR Sanctuary where she will remain here with all her friends.

molly

MISS MOLLY

We are looking to place our spayed miniature dachshund Molly (She is about two thirds the size of our grown cats.) We adopted Molly from a breeder who was dying of cancer so unfortunately we never got her AKC papers even though the breeder said she was going to get them for us.

Due to unfortunate circumstances we are moving to a location that does not allow pets. Molly is very sweet and has been raised with a German Shepard, a Golden Retriever and 2 cats. She gets along fine with all of them. Although our children were teens when we first brought her home the past 7 months she has been living with my grandson in the house. She is very gentle with him as he is learning to "pet" her and sometimes grabs her ears or tail. She does not growl just sits there and puts up with it and dashes away at the first opportunity.

Although she is potty trained during the day at night she needs to be placed in a kennel or pen, as she will have accidents in the middle of the night.

Molly developed Glaucoma with bleeding behind both of her eyes.  The vet had to due surgery to remove both eyes.  Molly is an amazing little fur-baby...she moves around the house and yard like she always did...she does get turned around once in awhile, she barks for help.  Her brothers and sisters watch out for her when she is outside.
